Ruth Dreifuss

Legacy: “How has your Jewish origin impacted your life as the first woman President of Switzerland?”

Ruth Dreifuss: “This was my big chance to survive but born something like five kilometers from the German border, with that big shadow of the extermination by the Nazis the time of the big slaughter is something that accompanied me for my whole life, and very soon showed me that well we have to fight for human rights, we have to fight against barbarianism.

But this conscience to be a Jew, to be a member of a threatened minority, I think was very important for my political socialization.

I am of Jewish origin because I feel very strongly that I am the legacy of this whole history of 2000 years and more.”
